It is estimated that more than 90 million people in North America snore while sleeping. Not only does this disturb family members, but poor sleep patterns can cause, tiredness, irritability and soaring blood pressure.
During sleep the muscles and tissues in the throat and mouth relax making the breathing airway smaller. This decrease in the airway space increases the velocity of air flowing through the airway during breathing. As this velocity increases in a constricted space, soft tissues such as the soft palate and uvula vibrate. These vibrations in the mouth and throat result in “noisy breathing” or generally referred to as snoring. The severity of snoring is increased by excess body weight, alcohol consumption and other sedatives.
The appliance I use is called the SILENT NIGHT appliance. This custom fabricated appliance worn at night moves the lower jaw into a forward position. This increases the three dimensional space in the airway tube which reduces air velocity and soft tissue vibration. By increasing the volumetric capacity of the airway, snoring is eliminated. This appliance differs from others as it does not allow the lower jaw to drop out and fall back to a retruded position. It is comfortable and does not interfere with breathing through the mouth. Even in cases of congested nasal passages, the device prevents snoring and allows uninhibited breathing. Small movements of the jaw are possible while wearing the appliance. This helps minimize stiffness in the joints in the morning.
Without question the SILENT NIGHT appliance can promote a deeper and more restful sleep. This will make for a healthier patient and happy family members.
