Use of porcelain veneers is a very cosmetic way to change the appearance of one’s teeth. It is a much more conservative procedure than placing crowns, and I believe more esthetic. A very thin layer of porcelain is bonded to the surface of your teeth giving way to a dramatic change. The porcelain will not dull or change with time giving many years of lasting beauty.
Most of the time the teeth will need to be prepared to create room for the porcelain. While this may only be 1 – 1.5 mm this prevents over bulking which gives a very artificial appearance. Depending on the amount of preparation required, sometimes no local anesthetic is necessary.
Publicity regarding “no-prep veneers” has been available for quite sometime, but most situations and conditions do not warrant this treatment. These veneers are very thin, less than 1 mm, and it is nice not to have to prepare teeth. However, the color and angulations need to be within certain parameters to give an esthetic result.
Whether veneers with preparation or no-prep veneers are used, both treatments can lead to a very esthetic and long lasting results.
